2008 Saturn Astra: Small Wonder!
Let’s be totally honest with one another for a moment, ladies and gentlemen. Normally, when one gets the itch or need to make a lifestyle-influenced vehicle purchase Saturn doesn’t necessarily top your list. Well, you may want to re-think, as has Saturn! Actually, that’s the brand’s banner statement these days.
If you are seeking a stylish and economical vehicle with good performance capabilities, Saturn has created one that will surely capture your admiration - as well as that of travelers sharing the roadways. A lot's been happening at Saturn lately. For one, Saturn has designed and introduced five all-new vehicles into their lineup since early 2006. The 2008 Saturn Astra adds to the portfolio as the fifth all-new product. I can attest first-hand that the Astra evokes fun and spirited driving emotions and in many ways provides a new sense of value for the brand.
The Astra is based on Europe’s award-winning Opel model developed in Germany. The Astra is surprisingly packed with a wide-array of quality standard features like power windows (with an express down feature) as well a monstrously-large sunroof that is double the size of any other vehicle in its segment (so large that it’s like having your own mobile space observatory!) Another nice standard feature is Saturn’s “Rain Sense” windshield wiper system that automatically deploys the wipers when things start to get a little moist. Saturn has even pitched in GM’s ever-popular OnStar system along with a one-year Safe & Sound plan. There’s no question about it, the Astra has a clean, contemporary design that visually separates itself from the pack.
Two stylish versions are available in a five-door and three-door model, with both having a similar silhouette. The sportier three-door model has a sleeker roofline that tapers more dramatically and has an upper rear section that is 3.5 mm lower than the five-door.
The Astra’s tightly wrapped styling is one of numerous elements that point to the designers' attention to detail, such as headlamps that have a deep, multi-planed appearance. Saturn has incorporated a subtle V-shape element that carries through the vehicle, starting at the lower lip of the front fascia, extending through the chrome accented grille and onto the hood. Like the front end, the rear also features a bright chrome trim bar with large, wraparound tail lamps and huge clear lenses. Its center, high-mounted brake light uses LED technology for fast and crisp illumination. XE and XR trim levels are offered for the five-door models. The three-door configuration comes only in XR trim that Saturn states was created with the more enthusiastic driver in mind. One obvious eye-pleasing feature is its favorable wheel package. The five-door Astra comes standard with 16” wheels, but can be upgraded to 17” aluminum rims. Three-door models come standard with 17” aluminum wheels that can be upgraded to 18” aluminum wheels and performance tires. ABS is standard and is tied into Astra’s standard stability control system. It features corner-braking control that helps neutralize over-steering when braking into curves.
I found the Astra’s handling capabilities responsive, similar to what I normally experience when handling European models. The suspension system comprises a MacPherson strut design in the front and a sophisticated torsion beam axle in the rear. Gas-charged, preloaded twin-tube struts and shocks provide quick and controlled responses to road bumps. The effect is to enhance the driver’s feeling of directness – as does the direct-acting front stabilizer bar that brings a more immediate feel to steering inputs.
Adding to the Astra’s nimble feel is a robust powertrain. The standard combination in all models is a 1.8-Liter Ecotec DOHC four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission. The Ecotec is enhanced with variable valve timing to optimize power output and fuel efficiency. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional on all models.
The Astra’s interior offers plenty of comfort, as I experienced via its nifty sport seating (available with leather upgrade) that surprisingly kept me well in place regardless of any twisty turns or sudden shifts in traffic patterns. Both cloth and leather seating options come standard with 3-level heated front seats.
The 2008 Saturn Astra 5-door XE will be offered at an MSRP of $15,995. The up-level Astra 5-door XR will start at $17,545 and the sporty Astra 3-door XR will be priced from $18,495. All prices include shipping and destination charges. So when your next itch or need makes its way to your pocket, put Saturn on the list!
