Coca Cola Presents the 2006 Essence Music Festival: The Essence of a True Family
In the eclipse of the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe, the largest annual gathering of African-Americans gained a deeper purpose to celebrate during the Fourth of July weekend. Participants came from all across the country to support the celebration at its temporary home of Houston, Texas, where people say “everything is big!” And the event showed the true “Essence “of that statement.
There was joyous chatter in the air weeks before the first day of the 12th Annual Essence Music Festival. Chevy and Essence Magazine partnered with Habitat for Humanity to personally create and build an amazing single family home for a single mother who was a victim of Hurricane Katrina. The gesture set the tone for the launch of ESSENCE CARES!, a national initiative to secure the future of black youth. Even Automotive Rhythms’ publisher, Kimatni Rawlins, was on hand to put his heart and soul into the construction. “It was pretty amazing to see the house being built from scratch,” said Rawlins. “We were all touched by the fact that our hard work and dedication was going towards a great deed.”
The 12th Essence Music Festival, known as the “Party with a Purpose,” featured performances by talented artists, and Essence Empowerment Seminars led by some of the country’s prominent African-American Leaders. The event articulated the message of love and power through Houston like no other. From the powerful words from the heart of Yolanda Adams to the encouragement and financial guidance from Magic Johnson, every seat was packed at the Reliant Exhibit Center during the week.
Chevrolet stayed true to its focus of saluting artists who have paved the way for the next generation with its participation in this year’s Festival. The company launched its partnership with R&B songstress Tamia, who reps the all new 2007 Chevy Tahoe, which is tactfully configured to honor working women with its detailed design and new features. After an intimate breakfast interview with Chevy executives and Tamia, it was clear that her addition to the “American Revolution” program, which also includes Slum Village and Omarion, will be a great fit.
The weekend rain couldn’t stop the fireworks that entertainers lit with their stellar performances. Reliant Dome fans were amazed by LL Cool J, Keisha Cole, Mary J. Blige, and Earth, Wind, and Fire to name a few. The Festival has clearly articulated a message to the masses which has placed its thumbprint in the whole calendar of events. If you haven’t been, this is an event that clearly defines a “Party with a Purpose.”
Thanks to all the folks at Chevy, Essence Magazine, and the people of Houston for the warm hospitality and the wonderful full weekend of excitement in the south. Until next year’s Festival, I’m sure all participants will look forward to a “family reunion” that Madea would not want to miss!
