2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé: The Quintessential One

Kimatni D. Rawlins, 02.20.08

First there was the 101 EX concept which showcased Rolls-Royce’s ability to engineer and design stately, modern powerhouses. Then there was the unleashing of the Drophead Coupé convertible. The half-million dollar vehicle has been such a triumph that it helped Rolls-Royce increase sales by 25% in 2007. And with so much success, where could they go next? Simple. To a hard-top version of the Drophead which amplifies the Phantom line to three models.

When we first witnessed the Phantom Coupé during a recent unveil in Monterey, California, thoughts of purity flowed through our minds. The hand-built luxury liner is one you envision drives from Rome to Monaco, Johannesburg to Cape Town or Vancouver to San Diego. Its aluminum space frame and romantic lines are motivated by the Phantom’s 6.75-liter V12 which generates 453 horsepower. Rolls-Royce even claims a 25% fuel increase with this engine. This is most likely due to the engine’s use of advanced fuel injection and variable valve timing. Most importantly, 75% of the vehicle’s power is available at just 1000 rpm. Standard 21” rims can be had in three styles including two forged alloys, the coach doors allow easier access within its sultry cabin, and the picnic style split boot (trunk) is borrowed from the Drophead. The brushed steel bonnet (hood) and “A”-pillars are an optional choice. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chairman and Chief Executive, Ian Robertson, said, “The Coupé has been designed and engineered to be the most dynamic interpretation of our values. Our 2007 sales figures illustrate how successful the entire model range has been.”

A Rolls-Royce is not a Rolls-Royce without attention to details. For example there are cameras in the front and rear of the vehicle which allow views on a split monitor so owners are 100% aware of their surroundings before takeoff. The Coupé can be selected in nine colors with each model massaged with five, hand finished coats of paint. An abundance of interior wood is hand-crafted by individuals specializing in the craft.

With a top speed of 155 mph (governed) and mid five-second 0 to 60 times, expect the Phantom Coupé to manifest all of your inhibitions with style and grace.
