2009 BMW 1 Series

BMW attempts a “2002” comeback with this performance oriented sports coupe. The 2002 models were revered for pure sports sedan performance, a trait that the legendary 3 Series got away from a bit by piling on weight-adding luxury.

The V6 engine in the 128i features 230 horsepower, and the 135i corrals 300 ponies. Both cars handle very well, thanks to sophisticated suspension componentry and electronics, and the 135i supplements handling prowess with flat out speed. Styling for this new coupe has drawn criticism from some quarters, but we like its taut, ready to rumble appeal.

The 128i retails for $28,600, while the 135i sells for $34,900. Riding on a lighter, more performance oriented platform than base model 3 Series cars, could the entry level 1 Series become the new standard bearer for BMW?
