DUB Super Series Pit Stops in the Motor City: Automotive Rhythms Unleashes Custom VW Phaeton Signature Series! Kimatni D. Rawlins, 07.16.05 DUB, the innovator of custom whips for entertainers and athletes, showed out when they brought their Super Series to one of the deepest car cultures in the country; Detroit City Rocks. Though you didn’t see any rides from some of the local heroes like Eminem or Slum Village at Cobo Hall, you did get enough chrome and rubber from owners who were just as street credible. Imagine an Impala stacked on 24s; an H2 with screens bigger than your home theater’s; or better yet a suicidal Corvette (the doors that is). These types of custom car shows are famous for bringing out the rawest and grittiest in vehicle makeovers. And let’s not talk about the number of rides with audio systems loud enough to shatter any bank teller’s windows! Maybe some of the auto designers need to pay homage to such shows to get a little inspiration on what the urban consumers are actually in to, opposed to what their “sixth sense” is telling them, because only a few have gotten it right so far; like Chrysler with their 300C and Magnum. But there is too much 300C overkill on the aftermarket. Especially the DUB scene since Chrysler is their auto sponsor. The show, which ran six hours, also featured contests from Shell Motor Oil to Goodyear Tires. Grand Theft Auto was handy for the competitors and lovely women were available for photos with impatient, young men. Graphically, the DUB show was a dichotomy of visual stimulation and musical finesse. To keep the crowds car interest from dying, DUB made sure to keep the party live. From opposite ends of the hall spectators could catch performances by Mike Jones, Trillville, Twista or Fabolous. Now for the big question. How many dubs do you need to purchase a VW Phaeton? 3,800! “You got to be kidding me!” one showgoer shouted. Minutes later another gentleman chanted just the opposite. “The Phaeton is serious! Don’t sleep,” he exclaimed with the energy of a newlwed. Well, the verbal war has been going in favor of the doubters who think VW should have stripped the “V-Dub” emblem from the grille of the Phaeton and came up with something unique for the $60,000 plus price tag. Yet, it’s funny how those same critics are silenced with enthusiasm once they bear witness to the Phaeton “Signature Series” by Automotive Rhythms. As one young lady stated, “It’s not boring anymore.” Our vehicle is endowed with 20” Davin forged-aluminum Speed 1s, Michelin rubber, a custom grille from E&G Classics, suspension tuning and a chip by Wagensport and later will receive an upgraded audio system with Audiobahn and JL Audio equipment. So bring on that S-Class or “7” and I’ll bet the Phaeton “Signature Series” will have you second-guessing your rights of passage as an auto enthusiast!
