Sony PlayStation 3 Launch Party: Play Beyond!
Fanboys around the globe can rejoice, as they can finally get their greasy palms on the Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3). The highly anticipated release of the PS3 had gaming gurus lining up days in advance of its release to assure their spot in history as being one of the first to cop the $600 system. It has launched in North America and Japan with much fanfare, but how does the console play? Was the wait truly worth it? Does the PlayStation 3 take gaming to next level while retaining its number one spot, or does the innovative Nintendo Wii or the Xbox 360 become the new gaming champ?
 Automotive Rhythms attended Sony's New York release of the new PS3, which had the hype and energy of host Ludacris. This probably had a little something to do with Luda's appearances at both the exclusive West and East coast PS3 launch parties, where those with luck could nab one of the most sought after gaming systems ever produced.
Luda' rocked, but the PS3 was definitely the star of the show. Flexing its cell-based processor which pushes output resolution up to 1080p through its HDMI output, the visuals are truly stunning. After playing the Xbox 360 for over a year, I can attest that the PS3 matches its visuals, and predict the PS3's next generation of games will tap into its power even more to surpass the Xbox 360's visuals.
 Weaving my way around the many stars present at the launch, I was able to sample several PS3 games. “Resistance: Fall of Man” is an outstanding sci-fi take on the traditional war-based first-person shooter that offers unusual weapons, cool settings, and exciting stages. The PS3 also has a gaggle of options for online playing to keep the gamer happy for a very long time.
System launches are always just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the future of the platform. There were mixed reactions to the Xbox 360 last year and now it's thriving. The Nintendo Game Cube had a successful debut, yet it didn't end up with a market share as big as originally predicted. What does this say for the PlayStation 3? Personally, I think that Sony's brand name and third party support will keep it at the top. Yet, Xbox 360's next generation games like “Gears of War” and “Halo 3” might have something to say about that though.
