“Scala Rider” Bluetooth Helmet Headset: Solving the Cell Phone Conundrum

Leon L. Brittain, 05.28.07

Tired of fumbling through your pockets to grab your phone while trying to remove your helmet and gloves? Oh yeah, let’s not forget the need to pull off the road to make all of this happen, which presents another element of danger.

One viable solution to this conundrum is Cardo’s “scala-rider” FM helmet headset. This device allows motorcyclists the convenience of making and receiving calls wirelessly via your Bluetooth enabled phone (or available adapter) while enjoying your riding experience. The headset attaches easily to your DOT regulation full-face helmet without causing any damage and is just as easy to remove, an important factor for those with multiple helmets.

The initial set up with my Motorola Q was straightforward. However, during my evaluation an issue with an unwarranted recurring automatic voice prompt plagued me. I later discovered this issue was indirectly related to the Q. Once over this hurdle I found the device’s controls were relatively easy to operate with gloves, as I became familiar with the location of the two main buttons. The FM radio is functional and serves its purpose provided you keep your expectations in check, as it doesn’t provide the stereo quality we’ve become accustomed in today’s portable devices.

The phone feature of this device and its sound quality work very well as this headset includes a noise canceling microphone, automatic volume adjustment that is based on speed and ambient noises and is also voice activated. All of which provides the safety and convenience of using your cell phone while keeping your hands and eyes where they belong – on the road.

The “scala-rider” FM retails for $216.99. For additional information visit: www.cardowireless.com
